Accidental overdose of prescription drugs kills prosecutor

A case in America has acted as a stark reminder of the dangers of prescription drug abuse. Lisa Ann Willardson, 45, was a former Las Vegas prosecutor. On Boxing Day 2013 she was found dead in her home after taking diazepam, clonazepam, citalopram and zolpidem. The dosage of each drug was not dangerous on its own but the combination caused a fatal overdose.

The coroner concluded that Ms Willardson died of an accidental overdose, which caused acute combined drug intoxication. Zolpidem is used to treat insomnia, citalopram is a treatment for depression, clonazepam is a sedative, and diazepam is used to treat anxiety and insomnia.

Ms Willardson had been suffering a great deal of stress following a ruling that found her boyfriend, Clark County Family Court judge Steven Jones, guilty of misconduct. The case for misconduct was because Mr Jones presided over cases handled by Ms Willardson while they were in a relationship. It was judged that several counts of misconduct had taken place.

Ms Willardson was herself sacked from her role as a prosecutor and had been planning to appeal the decision in court. Ms Willardson’s lawyer, Gary Modafferi, had spoken to his client recently and felt that she was in good mental health. He said: “Lisa was never depressed. She was in good spirits the last time I spoke to her.”

Many people abuse prescription drugs without realising the dangers. When speaking to a doctor about depression, anxiety or insomnia, it is vital to ensure that you inform them of all medications you are taking before accepting an additional prescription.
