Blackpool proposes plans to stop alcohol adverts outside pubs
Blackpool council officials have proposed plans to ban the advertising of alcohol outside pubs and clubs in the town. The reason for the ban is to tackle the growing drinking problem, which is causing many serious health problems in the local community.
The new by-law will prevent all licensed outlets in the town from advertising alcohol on the exterior of the premises. Pubs and clubs will not be able to display sponsor signs, and off-licences will not be able to display promotional materials in the window. The ban will also be likely to result in the removal of branded parasols outside pubs in the summer.
This is not the only step Blackpool is taking to control the binge drinking culture that now plagues the town. The council is also discussing the option to stop the sale of alcohol after 3am in part of the town centre to encourage party-goers to go home.
Councillor Sarah Riding, the cabinet member for health and wellbeing, made the following statement: “Looking at the introduction of a restriction on alcohol advertising is one of many ways that we are working to reduce the effect that alcohol has on the town and its residents.”
Blackpool has been a party town for decades and people from all over the North West visit Blackpool at the weekend. It is also a popular venue for hen and stag nights.
Councillor Riding also said: “We want people to enjoy visiting the town, and accept that having a drink is part of that; however, we do need to stop the detrimental impact that it can have on many people’s domestic lives as well.”
These changes could negatively impact on businesses in the town at a time when the local economy is suffering.
