GEEBS drug hospitalises users

The legal high GEEBS appears to be growing in popularity. Last weekend three young adults collapsed and were admitted to the intensive care unit at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital after taking it.

The three people had attended party in Wavertree after visiting several clubs in the town. Police believe that they also took other drugs on the same night.

Detective Superintendent Chris Green said: “We believe that the three people who collapsed in Borden Court this morning had taken a product called GEEBS, which is actually a chemical used to clean alloy wheels and is used as a legal high. We have consulted with the Royal Liverpool University Hospital and established that if taken this substance can have side effects. But at the end of the day this substance is a chemical used to clean car wheels and even in small doses can kill.”

The police are focusing their investigations on the party and are keen to speak to other people who attended to ensure that they are aware of the dangers of taking GEEBS.

GEEBS, chemical name gamma-Butyrolactone, is a legal high. It is a chemical used to clean alloy wheels and can be bought online. Once ingested the chemical converts into gammahydroxybutrate (GHB), which increases euphoria and decreases inhibitions.

The police plan to start speaking with local schools, colleges and the university to help educate students about the dangers of the drug.

The police are asking anybody who was at the party to contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or the St Anne Street police station on 0151 777 6064.
