New drug court in Benzie County focuses on rehabilitation
For those who have found themselves in trouble with the law because of a drug abuse problem, there is a new drug court in Benzie County.
The 19th Circuit Court helps adults with a drug abuse problem, focusing on getting them into a rehabilitation programme.
In legal terms, it could be described as a more intensive form of probation.
The idea came from judge David Thompson who managed to get a $36,000 grant for the project.
In the first year of operation, the programme will process six clients who have non-violent offences.
Drug delivery offenders do not fall within the scope of the programme.
Patricia Heins, 19th Circuit Court administrator, explained that it works voluntarily – with candidates required to show an interest in engaging.
The twice-monthly sessions resemble a conversation between judge and defendant, allowing a more personal connection.
To custom-tailor the drug rehabilitation programme to the client’s needs, the court works together with the following:
- Prosecution
- Law enforcement
- Counselling services
Everything takes place in a positive spirit, focusing on rehabilitation and recovery rather than punishment.
Legal probation requirements, such as community services, paying financial assessments, and meeting with a probation officer, remain in place.
Random drug screenings are also involved.
