Scottish pubs asked to offer 125ml wine glasses

In an attempt to reduce binge drinking in Scottish pubs, landlords are being asked to promote the sale of the ‘small’ 125ml glass of wine.

Most pubs sell wine in either 175ml or 250ml glasses, which represent a deceptively large amount of wine in one drink. A bottle of wine is 750ml; therefore, a 250ml glass is equal to one-third of a bottle – around three to four units.

One large glass of wine will put the average woman over their daily recommended limit for alcohol. A 125ml glass has a similar amount of alcohol as a 330ml bottle of beer at around one and a half to two units.

Scotland’s public health minister, Michael Matheson, wishes to see 125ml measures more widely available in pubs and restaurants. To promote this, the Scottish government has partnered with the drinks industry to launch a new voluntary campaign for more responsible drinking.

Scotland is starting to take its alcohol problem seriously and the government is placing alcohol at the top of its health agenda.

Mr Matheson said: “Clearly it is important that people have the ability to choose a smaller measure if they wish and by offering the 125ml measure, businesses are giving their customers the opportunity to drink responsibly.”

The voluntary campaign is asking pubs to display posters to promote the smaller glasses and to put the 125ml option on all menus and price lists. Staff training will also be needed to ensure that customers are always offered the 125ml glass first. Many customers wish to have more choice in buying wine and few realise how much alcohol is in a large glass. This is a very positive initiative.
