Teenager dies after taking Mortal Kombat drug in Glasgow

A 17-year-old girl from Duntocher in West Dunbartonshire has died after taking an illicit drug called Mortal Kombat in a Glasgow nightclub.

Regane MacColl became unwell at The Arches club on Saturday night and was taken to hospital, where she later died in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Police said Regane had taken a red Mortal Kombat tablet bearing a dragon stamp. On the same weekend four other people in the region were taken ill after taking the same recreational drug.

Regane attended the sixth form at St Peter the Apostle High School in Clydebank. Head teacher Linda Booth said: “Our whole school community feels a deep sense of grief and our thoughts and prayers are with Regane’s family and friends at this devastating time. Regane was a popular, hardworking and enthusiastic pupil, and staff always found her to be very pleasant and well mannered.”

Mortal Kombat is believed to be an ecstasy-like compound that may contain both ecstasy and methoxyamphetamine, which is also known as PMA or Death. According to the Urban Dictionary website, Mortal Kombat is a combination of mephedrone and ketamine. PMA cannot be detected using basic testing kits, which makes it impossible for club-goers to know what they are really taking.

Mr James Stevenson, an A&E consultant with Ayrshire and Arran, has warned youngsters to avoid all party drugs. He stated: “People who choose to take drugs are playing Russian roulette with their life. They have no way of knowing what they are taking and, as a result, some of them will die.”
